Around 40% of UK carbon emissions are linked to the built environment - this includes both the construction and the use of the built environment. Construction is also responsible for 50% of all extracted materials.
The selection of the most appropriate materials with the lowest embodied carbon is essential for the reduction in the carbon burden of the industry. As well as the need to use low carbon materials in construction, the need to minimise energy and water consumption within buildings is key to reaching our climate change targets.
The Technical Communities that make up the built environment theme in IOM3 have the common challenge of reducing the carbon footprint of the UK’s built environment while, through the selection of innovative materials, delivering building that can help reduce the environmental impact of construction projects, saving energy, reduce pollution, conserving resources and also create a healthier indoor environment by reducing the use of harmful chemicals and improving air quality.
