UN uses satellites to bolster mine standards
The United Nations will strengthen mine safety and standards through satellite monitoring and risk-profiling.
Value.space, a satellite-based risk assessor in London, UK, is working with the UN Economic Commission for Europe on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents.
This is the first time the Commission has supported satellites for mining infrastructure.
'The use of cutting-edge satellite technology will further sharpen UNECE’s support to identify and manage risks linked to mine tailings in the Pan-European region and beyond,' says Claudia Kamke - Affairs Officer for the UNECE Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents.
'Strengthening mine tailings safety is especially crucial given the projected increases in mining activities over the coming decades, including to meet the demands of the energy transition.'
