UK falling short of projected 2030 electricity demand
The UK will need the equivalent of six gigafactories by 2030, predicts the Faraday Institution.
The British research institution says each gigafactory will need to produce 20GWh a year in its latest report.
It also estimates demand rising to a 10-gigafactory equivalent by 2040.
The report on UK electric vehicle and battery production potential to 2040 thinks the UK is making progress, but not fast enough compared to its European competitors.
UK battery manufacturing plants that have been announced or under construction are expected to reach 57.6GWh by 2030, around 4% of total European GWh capacity. Behind Germany - at 21% - and six other countries.
The report suggests 270,000 UK jobs could be supported by the electric vehicle and battery industry to 2040.
This report comes as the US announces more than US$3bln to support America's battery manufacturing sector, which will create over 12,000 jobs.
The US Department of Energy says 25 selected projects across 14 states will boost domestic production of advanced batteries and battery materials nationwide.
