Trade body warns of loss of tin cans from EPR packaging scheme
The Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MPMA) fears metal packaging costs will increase.
The trade body believes the densities of different packaging materials have not been properly considered in setting Extended Producer Responsibility fees. It says this will drive companies and consumers to use less recyclable materials, adversely impacting this sector.
It is asking the UK Government to interrogate its fee structure, warning of the loss of the tin can - which it says is one of the most sustainable packaging materials due to its long shelf life.
Representing 22 companies, the MPMA has written to the relevant government secretaries to highlight the unintended consequences of its recently published packaging EPR fees.
Without revisions, MPMA believes the scheme will work in direct opposition to its sustainability goals to improve the circular economy.
