Workers based in Port Talbot and Newport Llanwern, Wales, will begin working to rule and enforce a continuous overtime ban from 18 June 2024.

The action is in response to Tata’s plans to close its blast furnaces and cut 2,800 jobs. Around 1,500 workers - members of the union Unite - are organising the industrial action.

Sharon Graham, Unite’s General Secretary, is critical of Tata’s current deal with the UK Government and anticipates the UK’s steel industry will fall behind its international counterparts.

‘Tata’s disastrous deal with the current government would only see its other overseas operations take advantage of the coming boom in green steel at the expense of South Wales.’

She has called for a halt to plans until the upcomng General Election on 4 July. This comes after the union secured a commitment from the Labour Party that it will invest £3bln in UK steel, compared to the £500mln pledged by the current government.

‘Tata can no longer ignore Labour’s call to wait for the £3bln UK Steel Investment Fund,' says Graham.
