The partnership forms £1.25bln investment into a 1.8Mt pickling line. This is alongside £500mln of Government support into the Welsh site.

The contract was signed by Clecim – who design and supply mechanical and process equipment, and ABB – who deliver electrification and automation technology.

The new pickle line will process hot rolled coils to eliminate oxide scale formed during the steel rolling process, ensuring a clean surface for further processing and enhancing the bonding of coatings and finishes.

Tata Steel CEO Rajesh Nair says the line will ‘form a major part of our green steelmaking facility at Port Talbot’.

The assembly is expected to employ 250 locals.
