Life Cycle Thinking in a Materials Engineering Context |
Over the past decade, there has been an escalating demand by consumers for “sustainable” or “environmentally friendly” products. But what exactly does “sustainability” really mean from a materials engineering perspective? This presentation explores the topic by looking at the drivers for sustainable design and factors that affect materials selection. Various materials classes are analyzed in the context of their life-cycles, and ways for quantifying “green” options are examined. |

Stronger, Lighter, Faster, Greener: Changing Priorities for the Global Materials Science & Engineering Communities |
Prof Michael Clinch CEng FIMMM, Chair, IOM3 Technology Communities Board This presentation highlights materials as a key enabler for industrial innovation, emphasising the importance of understanding how different materials need to work together in real world products and systems. Michael will draw upon examples from his own career experience in lightweight materials and structures to illustrate how, increasingly, we are moving away from traditional performance goals and focusing on environmental considerations and sustainability as key drivers for innovation. The presentation will conclude with the emphasis of the power of people and the importance of collaboration, which have been key themes throughout his career. |
