Surprise! Ancient mine at Cornish roadworks
Drone pictures have revealed a previously unknown tin mine at the site of a new Cornish road intended to open next year.
The St Austell to A30 link road is, according to Cornwall Council, unlikely to be delayed by the discovery of the approximately 3m-deep suspected sloped entry to a former tin mine.
The county has a rich mining history and currently Cornish Metals is working towards re-opening the historic South Crofty underground tin mine in 2027.
Work is presently focused on mine dewatering, continued resource drilling and evaluating additional downstream opportunities.
The discovery has not phased the local Council, which notes that stumbling accross old mine works is a familiar occurence.
