The consultation comes soon after the launch of the Steel Council, which will advise on rebuilding the industry and developing the strategy due to be launched in the Spring.

The Steel Strategy will look at the long-term issues facing the industry like high electricity costs, unfair trading practices and scrap metal recycling.

Up to £2.5bln will be put towards supporting the UK steel industry, says the government.

The Plan for Steel Consultation closes on 11.59pm on 30 March. IOM3 is seeking input on its reponse to the consultation.

Also this week, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Planning Committee approved Tata Steel UK’s proposals for electric arc furnaces at Port Talbot.

The planning application sought permission to construct an electric arc furnace, two new ladle metallurgy furnaces for secondary steelmaking and supporting infrastructure.
