Former SSI steelworks site begins redevelopment

UK Government share sold bringing all elements of the former Redcar SSI Steelworks site under local control.

Work has begun to create a new business park at the former Redcar SSI Steelworks site, which entered liquidation in 2015. The South Tees Development Corporation (STDC) now plans to create more than 20,000 jobs with a new business park on the wider 4,500 acre site, and establish clean energy, low carbon and hydrogen technologies.

Symbolically, today, on the anniversary of the site closure, Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen marked the anniversary by demolishing its former gatehouse, allowing work to begin on a new entrance.
