Speeding up Sellafield decommissioning

Sometimes rethinking a process is all that is needed. Originally, it was thought that waste in a Sellafield, UK, pond would need to be taken out via a new processing facility.

However, decommissioning teams realised that a new route was possible  via an existing Sellafield building, the Waste Encapsulation Plant. This means the material can be removed immediately, rather than waiting until 2026.

The first basket of waste has now been successfully exported. Another 500 baskets will be removed over the next three to four years.
