Polar Night Energy is developing a Sand Battery for power-to-heat-to-power capabilities, to convert excess renewable energy into heat, before being turned back into electricity.

The company is starting a two-year programme of development and commercialising its electricty production capabilities.

Imatar will participate in the development and be among the first to be offered a large-scale system. The energy company will provide Polar Night Energy with commercial piloting opportunities on their wind farms when the technology advances.

The collaboration aims to boost wind and solar power profitability, and promote innovation in energy storage.

'Renewable energy production business has finally reached the volume level where we can focus more on the cost-efficient, large-scale and flexible energy storage', says Ilmatar’s New Business Development Manager Katja Koponen.
