REF is how the UK assesses the quality of research in UK higher education institutions.

It first occurred in 2014, and then again in 2021. The next exercise is due for 2029.

The REF team is seeking to appoint, on secondment, up to 12 panel advisers to provide procedural guidance to a main panel and a group of sub-panels, and up to 21 panel secretaries for support on up to two sub-panels.

Applications close at midday on Monday 13 January 2025.

The panels bring together specialists in each Unit of Assessment. There are four main ones and 34 sub-panels, which collaborate with two advisory panels.

REF is also seeking to recruit members to the main and sub-panels, who must have the support of their employers.

The closing date for sub-panel chair and deputy chair applications is midday 6 February 2025.

Please note that the application form will remain open for all other roles until midday 28 April 2025.

There are also a number of town halls to hear directly from the REF team.
