Dr Edwin Farmer FRSA was President of the Institute of Materials between 1999 and 2001 and died last October.
Born in 1936, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Birmingham University in 1957 and completed a PhD in Materials there in 1959.
Following University, he moved to Brico Ltd in Coventry in 1960. At Brico he was a Materials Scientist, then Chief Materials Scientist, General Manager, Director and finally Managing Director. In 1975 he moved to Wellworthy Ltd in Lymington as Managing Director.
After Wellworthy, in 1981 he moved to The Morgan Crucible Company plc in Windsor. Following a spell as the Chairman of the Thermal Ceramics Division, he became CEO and finally overall Chairman.
At the end of his career, he assumed Chairman roles with Southern Electric plc and Devro plc and a Non-Executive Board Director role with Scapa Group plc in Blackburn.
Alongside his Presidential role with the Institute of Materials, Edwin was awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1997. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. In 1994 he became a Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of Science Instrument Makers London.
Edwin was married to Beryl and had two children, Andrew and Amanda. Outside of work his main interests were music, squash, rugby, travel and hill walking.
