Marking 20 years of Chartered Environmentalists
20th September 2024 marks 20 years since the first Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) certificates were signed.
“If not now, when?” is the message from the Society for the Environment (SocEnv) to those wanting to lead the way towards a more sustainable future.
SocEnv was launched in 2002 to champion competence in environmental practices across sectors. The first objective was to create a chartered designation to professionalise this work – and so, Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) was born in 2004 via a Royal Charter. One of the key reasons – a platform to spearhead change.
20 years on and change is needed more than ever with the climate, biodiversity and environmental emergencies in full swing.
The first cohort of 65 CEnvs officially received their accreditation on the 20th September 2004. They established the community that’s still growing today - now nearly 8,000 strong and leading the way towards a more sustainable future. As an IOM3 member, you have the opportunity to join the CEnv community and showcase your commitment to environmental good practice.
Reflecting on 20 years of CEnv registration, SocEnv Chief Executive and IOM3 Fellow, Dr Emma Wilcox CEnv FIMMM CMgr, said:
'CEnv registration has changed the face of professionalism for a global challenge – protecting our environment. I have no doubt that CEnv - and, more recently, REnvP and REnvTech – has amplified influence, trust, commitment, and change. The CEnv community also bridges knowledge gaps to drive innovation and quicken the adoption of good practice across sectors. This is the ideal opportunity to thank all of our registrants for their hard work.
'But we share a vision with our registrants and partners for a sustainable future, which we are yet to achieve. So, if you are thinking about becoming a CEnv, leading the way and, playing your part, I ask – if not now, when?'
Continuing the reflections theme, 20 CEnvs have contributed to a snapshot video series to confirm what CEnv means to them in 10 seconds. Watch now on YouTube for a spot of inspiration.
Demand is growing for individuals who have the knowledge and experience to help solve some of the big environmental challenges of our time – globally and locally. The CEnv award is a demonstration of knowledge, expertise, commitment, and professionalism across all sectors that environmental professionals practice within.
IOM3 CEO Dr Colin Church CEnv FIMMM said, 'Materials, minerals & mining are fundamental to the future of our society, and IOM3 members need to ensure we work in an environmentally sensitive way when finding, extracting, processing, using and disposing of the materials we manage. What better way to demonstrate your commitment to this than getting formal recognition for your environmental expertise? If you’d like to know more, just get in touch with the IOM3 membership team now to see whether Chartered Environmentalist, Registered Environmental Practitioner or Registered Environmental Technician is the right professional qualification for you.'
IOM3 Director of Membership Paul Skerry CEng FIMMM says, 'The Chartered Environmentalist qualification identifies the specialist knowledge and experience our members have in the area of sustainability, often as part of a much wider role. As we move towards 2030 and beyond and an increased emphasis on the behavioural aspects of sustainability we see this as being a significant part of our membership growth’.
