Manchester graphene collaboration announced
A UAE-based company to develop and produce graphene based products using 2D materials has been created between Graphene Innovations Manchester Ltd and Quazar Investment Company (UAE).
The memoranda of understanding was signed in a bid to tackle CO2 emissions. The new company will invest over $1bln to develop and mass manufacture a range of graphene-based products, including:
- GIM Concrete – a construction material that reduces CO2 by eliminating cement. It also uses no water, cures quickly and can be made using recycled materials. GIM Concrete is said to eventually become carbon negative.
- GIM Hydrogen (Type IV & V) – graphene enhanced storage tanks and pipes made using proprietary AI-based robots with improved H2 barrier properties and leak prevention.
- GIM Smart Clothing – protective clothing PPE technologies that actively cool workwear and improve comfort for people in extremely hot environments.
Graphene was first isolated in 2004 by two scientists at The University of Manchester, subsequently awarded the Nobel Prize in 2010.
Dr Vivek Koncherry, CEO Graphene Innovations Manchester says, 'We believe that these ground-breaking technologies will make a significant impact on reducing carbon dioxide emissions and improving suatainability, while at the same time providing companies with the ability to improve the performance of their products.'
