IOM3 responds to UK Government Defence Strategy plans
IOM3 highlights that a more integrated and long-term approach to materials is required to realise the Defence Strategy’s ambitions.
The Ministry of Defence set out its approach to developing a new Defence Industrial Strategy that aims to align the imperatives of national security and a high-growth economy.
IOM3 responded to the Statement of Intent highlighting that a more integrated and long-term approach to materials, supply chain resilience, research investment, and skills development in materials science and engineering is required to fully realise the Strategy’s ambitions.
The response was informed by the expertise and experience of IOM3 members including the IOM3 Defence Safety and Security Group Leadership Team. It emphasised that materials and minerals underpin the UK’s defence capabilities. From advanced materials innovation in quantum and photonic materials to enable secure communications, to lightweight and high-strength materials for increased fuel efficiency in aerospace, and critical materials for next-generation stealth technology. Secure supplies and sustainable management of materials and minerals are therefore fundamental for national security and economic growth.
The submission drew attention to six key areas that require greater focus and consideration in the development of the Defence Industrial Strategy and made associated recommendations:
- Driving innovation in materials
- Developing UK supply chains
- Securing critical materials supply chains
- Support for SMEs
- Strengthening the materials science and engineering workforce
- Explicit alignment with net-zero
