The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released its latest findings which cover scientific, technical, and socio-economic data on climate change.
The latest report from the UN body urges policymakers and businesses to continue cooperating to reduce global carbon emissions and warns ‘Keeping warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial
levels requires deep, rapid and sustained greenhouse gas emissions reductions in all sectors’. Following the report, the UK government is due to publish its updated Net Zero Strategy and response to the independent Net Zero Review before the end of March 2023.
IOM3 CEO Dr Colin Church FIMMM, responded to the report, saying, ‘The message is clear, greater ambition is needed, and it must be delivered at pace. The report sets out that progress is being made, but it’s not enough. There is a rapidly closing window of opportunity, and every increment of global warming escalates risks and related loss and damages. Action is required across all sectors and systems to ensure rapid and sustained mitigation and adaptation’.
‘IOM3 members play a vital role in delivering the change needed to successfully transition to a low-carbon, resilient and resource efficient society. Whether it’s the development and deployment of low-carbon technologies; increasing resource, energy and technological efficiency; or influencing necessary changes in demand, the expertise of professionals in materials, minerals and mining is fundamental to achieving the emissions reductions required for a sustainable future’.
