IOM3 publishes energy transition policy paper
IOM3 has published a policy paper setting out key actions required as the UK, and the rest of the world, transitions from energy dependency based on burning fossil fuels to low carbon energy sources.
Materials are critical to the energy transition, from their availability and recyclability to understanding the limits of their performance. Led by the IOM3 Energy Transition Group (ETG), The Energy Transition: Getting to Net-zero explores a range of materials related challenges and steps that need to be taken for the UK to meet its net-zero energy goals.
The paper outlines the key role of four areas critical to delivering the energy transition at the pace required;
- Increasing energy efficiency,
- Responsibly meeting the demand for critical materials,
- Transitioning to a circular economy, and
- Ensuring a pipeline of competent people at every stage of the value chain
Dr Richard M Oblath CEng FIMMM FEI, Chair of the ETG Leadership Team, said ‘I am delighted that our Technical Community, the IOM3 Energy Transition Group, has led this IOM3 Policy Paper on the greatest challenge of our age. I hope this spotlights the need for our members, governments, industry and other stakeholders to work together to accelerate the energy transition reducing greenhouse gases, which do not respect borders between countries, and equitably improve our planet.’
