IOM3 members recognised in Top 50 Women in Engineering 2024

Women’s Engineering Society honours IOM3 members as part of WE50

The Women’s Engineering Society (WES) held its annual WE50 event on 24 June to announce the Top 50 Women in Engineering 2024: Enhanced by Engineering.

This was in celebration of International Women in Engineering Day, centred around the theme, Enhanced by Engineering and winners were chosen from a longlist of 100 nominees. Elizabeth Donnelly MSc FRSA, Chief Executive Officer at WES said, ‘In 2024 we selected the theme Enhanced by Engineering for the Top 50 Women in Engineering Awards and International Women in Engineering Day, to showcase the brilliant women who are leading the way in engineering better lives for us all’.

We are proud to announce that three members of IOM3 were among the top 50, with a further three in the list of 100 finalists.

Winners

  • Professor Judith Driscoll FREng CEng FIMMM, is Professor of Materials Science at the University of Cambridge. For more than 30 years, she has made pioneering contributions to the engineering of oxide energy devices while nurturing younger researchers. Her work in thin film nanoengineering enhances superconductors, magnetic sensors and energy cells, driving industrial advancements. Committed to equality, Driscoll mentors engineers and leads initiatives promoting women in engineering. 
  • Huyen Le is a Doctoral Resercher at Loughborough University. Her PhD research on antibacterial coatings reflects her commitment to sustainability and healthcare improvement, demonstrating the power of engineering in improving human lives. Recognising the importance of diversity and inclusion, she mentors female engineers and tirelessly champions their cause, sharing her story to empower others to pursue STEM careers.
  • Emily Walport CEng MIMMM is a Materials Engineer at Arup. She has become an industry leader in sustainable materials and the circular economy. Her work includes global projects as well as advocating for decarbonisation and systemic change, and she frequently delivers thought leadership and industry events. Emily mentors female engineers, engages in STEM outreach and leads Arup's community engagement programme.
