IOM3 hosts Fellows Day and Sustainable Future Awards 2024

Fellows of IOM3 were invited for Fellows Day along with the finalists for Sustainable Future Awards to announce the winners.

We are delighted to share that new and existing IOM3 Fellows from a diverse range of technical backgrounds and sectors joined us at 297, Euston Road on 14 November to celebrate Fellows Day. We were also joined by the finalists of the Sustainable Future Awards 2024, as the winners of the three categories were announced.

After a tea and coffee reception, Professor Mark Miodownik MBE FREng CEng HonFIMMM delivered a lecture on the 'Death of Consumerism'. For more than twenty years, Mark has been conducting materials science research that links to the arts and humanities, medicine, and society. This culminated in the establishment of the UCL Institute of Making, where he is a director and runs the research programme. He is currently a Professor of Materials & Society at Universtiy College London.

Following this insightful lecture, guests attended a drinks reception, after which dinner was served in the Bessemer Suite, and the winners of the Sustainable Future Awards 2024 were announced. It is our pleasure to congratulate the winners:

  • Circular Economy category winner: Freefoam Building Products

  • Sustainable Materials Enabling Net-zero category winner: Ecobelt

  • Inclusive Practices category winner: Johnson Matthey

Roger Harrabin, one of our judges for the Sustainable Future Awards, is an ex-BBC correspondent and Honorary Fellow of St Catherine's College, University of Cambridge. On the Awards, he said, 'Materials are vital in our society, but they don’t generally register on the public radar. The awards create a focus for people to tell stories about materials which would otherwise go untold.'

Thank you to our judges for being an integral part of the Awards, and to all the capable entries we received this year, and congratulations again to the winners.

We were also delighted to have with us, our new IOM3 Fellows, who were welcomed by the current President Dr Kate Thornton FIMMM.

The 2024 IOM3 Awards and Prizes recognising execeptional personal achievement, for published work and for contributions to the profession will be held in December.
