IOM3 celebrates UK Recycle Week
The nation’s annual celebration of recycling is here. UK Recycle Week takes place on 20–26 September 2021 and we are proud to be supporting this campaign for another year.
IOM3 CEO Colin Church CEnv FIMMM emphasises the importance of this week on the calendar, stating, ‘Recycling more is an essential step on the journey to Net Zero. Keeping those precious materials in productive use for as long as possible reduces the demand for new stuff and the energy use that goes with it. Materials science and engineering knowledge is vital to this effort, so IOM3 is a strong supporter of UK Recycle Week.’
This year’s theme is focused on ‘Step It Up this Recycle Week.’ The theme focuses on the fight against climate change and working together to tackle the crisis.
To help celebrate this week, we will be sharing articles from Materials World, as well as podcast episodes, blogs and much more in the theme of recycling. Our IOM3 Sustainable Development Group has written a blog on how recycling can impact the climate crisis. In the blog, Tessa Lee GradIMMM provides an overview of why consumption of products can contribute to climate change, outline how recycling can mitigate these contributions and finally, assess some of the policy ambitions for the UK.
IOM3 hosted its Sustainable Future Week (6–10 September) looking at the vital role of professionals in materials, minerals and mining in the transition to a low carbon, resource efficient society. From the circular economy and extractive industries to manufacturing and skills; the webinars cover a range of subjects and discussions in the lead up to COP26 in November.
