The metro mayors will lead clean power projects across the country, including rooftop solar, onshore wind and hydropower.

The investment comes as part of the UK Government’s Plan for Change, and profits can be reinvested in the community or to reduce energy bills.

Each mayoral strategic authority in England will be invited to apply for a share of the funding.

In addition, a further £200mln investment is earmarked for solar power and renewables projects for schools, hospitals, local authorities and community energy groups. Savings will be reinvested in schools and the National Health Service, says the government.

Funding will be awarded to projects that can be delivered in the coming year.
