Professor Ambrose Taylor

Materials Engineering, Imperial College London

Ambrose Taylor is Professor of Materials Engineering at Imperial College London and Chair of the Society for Adhesion and Adhesives. He studied for a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bristol, and a PhD at Imperial College London. He then undertook post-doctoral research on high-temperature resistant adhesive and composite materials. He was awarded a prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Post-doctoral Research Fellowship and a Royal Society Mercer Award for Innovation. He specialises in the characterisation and modelling of polymers, including for use as coatings, adhesives and fibre composites. He also works with polymer recycling and the use of bio-based resins for formulating polymers. He has a special interest in the fracture processes and toughness of these materials. Applications include the construction, aerospace and automotive industries, as well as for the conservation of cultural heritage such as paintings and furniture.

Professor Gary Critchlow

Professor of Surface & Interface Science, Loughborough University

Gary has spent over 30 years developing materials and processes for the optimisation of both abhesion and adhesion. This research has been conducted in collaboration with major companies and research providers in sectors including: aerospace; defence; automotive; electronics, and; building and civil engineering. In this presentation, Gary will share some of his experience in developing surface processes for optimised adhesion.

Professor Andrew Crocombe

Emeritus Professor, University of Surrey

Professor Crocombe has undertaken extensive research in the field of Structural Adhesive Bonding with important work also being carried out in the fields of Composites and Bio-mechanics. He has more than 135 published journal papers relating to these areas. Within the course of this research around 50 PhD students, post-doc researchers and visiting researchers have been supervised and research has been undertaken with and for many industries. The research in adhesive science, which began by considering design methodologies for bonded joints, grew to encompass the areas of analytical, numerical and experimental stress analysis of structural adhesives and composite materials. The driving mission over the latter years has been to extend the predictive modelling techniques developed for quasi-statically loaded structures to embrace loading conditions such as static and dynamic fatigue and environmental degradation that are more typical of actual service load conditions. Much of the focus of this work is on damage detection and progressive damage modelling. Detection techniques include Digital Image Correlation and optical sensors embedded in composites or the adhesive. Progressive damage modelling involves both cohesive zone and continuum damage models and have been applied to metallic and composite bonded joints and composite panels. He has recently retired and is now Emeritus Professor at the University of Surrey.

Main research interests in composite materials and sandwich structures:  damping and dynamic elastic moduli; strength; interlaminar shear behaviour; non-destructive testing; mechanical properties of the polymeric matrices; design and manufacture of composite components; adhesive bonding; impact; mathematical modelling and strength prediction. 

Professor Tony Kinloch FREng FRS

Professor of Adhesion, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College London

Professor Tony Kinloch, FREng FRS holds a personal chair as ‘Professor of Adhesion’ in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London. He has published over three and fifty hundred patents and refereed papers in the areas of adhesion and adhesives, fatigue failure and repair of aircraft structures, toughened polymers and the fracture of polymers, fibre-composites and nano-composites; and written and edited seven books in these areas. He has been awarded the ‘Armourer’s and Braziers Prize for Materials Science’ from The Royal Society, the ‘Le Prix Dédale de la Sociéte Française d’Adhesion’ from the French Adhesion Society, the ‘Hawksley Gold Medal’ of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, ‘The Griffith Medal’ from the Institute of Materials and the US Adhesion Society 3M Award for ‘Outstanding Excellence in Adhesion Research’. In 1997 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) and in 2007 was elected a Fellow of The Royal Society (FRS).
