FEMS Junior EUROMAT 2024 wraps up successfully

FEMS Junior EUROMAT 2024 was held in Manchester between 15-18 July.

IOM3 hosted the FEMS Junior EUROMAT 2024 conference in Manchester this year. The conference is held every two years, celebrating and showcasing the work of early career materials scientists and researchers through oral and poster presentations.

The conference opened on 15 July, and delegate registration began in full swing, followed by workshops on career planning, materials selection for sustainability, and data management planning geared towards PhD researchers. In the evening, delegates collected for an active evening to run a 5K around Manchester.

Refreshed and with plenty exercises, Day 1 officially began with the Opening Session addresses delivered by IOM3 President Dr Kate Thornton, FEMS President Aldo R Boccaccini, Dr Ilija Rašović, and Professor Paloma Fernández-Sánchez, welcoming delegates, sponsors, and speakers to the conference. Sarah Haigh from the University of Manchester and Lola González-García from INM-Leibniz Institute for New Materials delivered the plenary and keynote speeches respectively. The evening ended with an exciting game of Matopoly – teams of up to 4 people were challenged to orienteer around the city by following clues which lead to destinations within a materials science theme.

The second day started on a strong note with a plenary session by Judy Lee from the University of Surrey, following which three parallel sessions began presentations for the day. Later in the afternoon Radha Boya from the University of Manchester delivered the second keynote speech for the conference. The FEMS Master Thesis Award final was also held that evening, with the winners of the national Master Thesis Awards presenting their theses. At the end of the evening all delegates and guests were invited to the Imperial War Museums Manchester for the conference dinner, sponsored by Lucideon, where the winners for the FEMS Master Thesis Award final were announced.

Congratulations to Oliver Preuß, Inès Addi, and Sara Scolari for coming in first, second and third place respectively in the FEMS Master Thesis Award final.

On the third day of FEMS Junior EUROMAT, we heard from Prof Nikolaos Michailidis from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki as part of the plenary session, and later in the afternoon from Professor Paloma Fernández-Sánchez from Universidad Complutense de Madrid as a keynote speaker. Delegates and guests kept the enthusiasm going until the close of the conference where we heard from the Scientific Committee Co-chairs Professor Paloma Fernández-Sánchez and Dr Ilija Rasovic, and the Conference Chair and IOM3 President Dr Kate Thornton.

Congratulations to the organisers of FEMS Junior Euromat, and a huge thank you to our sponsors, delegates, and speakers for making the conference a success.
