New regulations on packaging waste mean UK organisations may be responsible for the costs of dealing with packaging waste.

A document published on 15 August gives a preliminary fee range for each waste category and explains how the ranges were calculated.

Jude Allan MIMMM, Chair of IOM3 Packaging Group, believes this a step in the right direction. ‘Publication of the fees is great news for industry as it gives some clarity and allows businesses to start to financially plan. It also demonstrates that the drive and determination to deliver pEPR as part of the overall packaging reforms by the new Government is strong. IOM3 looks forward to continuing to support the development of the fees and the introduction of modulation.’

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have webinars running on the topic.

The DEFRA - EPR - Illustrative Base Fees - Technical Webinar takes place at 2pm on Tuesday 20 August.

The DEFRA - Joint Resources & Waste Stakeholder Engagement Forum covers, among other things, the Circular Economy and EPR illustrative base fees. It takes place at 2pm on Monday 19 August.

The government intends to publish refined figures for the illustrative, year one base fees in September 2024.
