Tenova has been awarded the contract by Latrobe Magnesium Limited (LMG) to engineer, supply and supervise the plant showcasing Tenova's patented technology.
The plant will harvest magnesium metal from a fly ash resource - a waste stream from brown coal power generation. The released CO2 emissions are reportedly 50% less than comparable magnesium production plants.
The demonstration plant will initially have capacity of 1,000t magnesium per year. In the second stage, LMG intends to develop a commercial-scale operation with a capacity of 10,000-40,000t/yr.
