Call for Papers: Interdisciplinarity
Interdisciplinary Science Reviews seeks article submissions that explore and provide theoretical clarity and insight into core questions around interdisciplinary research, teaching, and leadership.

Interdisciplinarity is the integration of concepts and methods to create works of synthesis. While the term is common currency, questions of scope and justification, methodology and evaluation, have now become pressing as we enter a new era in the pursuit of interdisciplinarity. In this context, the journal Interdisciplinary Science Reviews has recently started a chapter of growth and innovation, aimed to provide the forum our field seeks to progress key debates in interdisciplinary studies.
Aims
This call is seeking to commission a certain number of high-quality papers intended to provide theoretical clarity and insight to questions about interdisciplinary research, teaching, and leadership. Interdisciplinary Science Reviews publishes articles that offer explicit and engaged articulations of interdisciplinarity as distinct from multi- or other forms of cross-disciplinarity.
Process
We invite scholars, educators, and practitioners across the human, social, and natural sciences, visual and performing arts, to submit an expression of interest for consideration. Letters of intent should consist of detailed abstracts of no more than 1,000 words including references, followed by a short biography of each author. Authors may be invited to submit a full manuscript, but invitation is no guarantee of publication.
This is an open call with no fixed deadline.
Scope
Although we are open to innovative ways of thinking about interdisciplinarity in theory and in practice, we are looking to commission papers that engage critically with any of the following lines of inquiry:
- Foundations of interdisciplinarity: Engaging with different understandings of the nature, scope, and significance of integration in interdisciplinary research, and / or with conceptual constructs of interdisciplinary thinking including but not limited to: superconcepts, threshold concepts, and traveling concepts.
- Methods and techniques of integration: Engaging with the dynamics and challenges of mixed-methods research for integrating different forms of knowledge, including case studies of successful and unsuccessful mixed methodology.
- Perspectives on interdisciplinary design and teaching: Engaging with learning scenarios and pedagogic practices in higher education, including curriculum and assessment strategies aimed at the pursuit of interdisciplinary learning outcomes.
- Interdisciplinarity and its relationship with complexity: Engaging with ways of articulating the character of interdisciplinary knowledge in terms of emergence and cognate notions in complexity science and the cognitive humanities.
- Science policy, evaluation, and application: Engaging with the demand for shared criteria for evaluating interdisciplinary research outputs, skills, and competencies in policy and business contexts; and / or applications to management practices and the development of interdisciplinary mindsets in leadership studies.
