The GMB Union says that its members are heading to Westminster amid fears for the 10,000 strong workforce.

The union says that dozens of employees of firms of major manufacturers, such as Wienerberger and Ibstock, will participate in a round table with ministers.

Despite profits of more than £300mln in 2022, the union reports that rocketing energy prices and missed housebuilding targets have seen companies stockpile bricks, close factories and slash jobs.

Charlotte Brumpton-Childs, GMB National Officer, says, 'The brick industry is on the brink of collapse at the same time we don’t have enough houses for people to live in.'
