Representing IOM3
Active supporters or volunteers will be told if they are able to represent or express views on behalf of IOM3 externally. Some roles, such as being on external committees, require this. Those active supporters or volunteers will be briefed to ensure their comments - which may end up in the public domain - are consistent with our current objectives and associated policies. Individuals who may be required to speak with the media are given specific training.
ASVs who are required to make presentations, or manage any online activity on behalf of IOM3, should do so using the correct IOM3 branding and templates; advice is available from the Communications team.
As is usual practice for charities and other organisations, anyone expressing views publicly on behalf of IOM3 who has not be cleared to do so will potentially be in breach of the Code of Conduct and potentially liable for sanction.
Social media is one arena in which IOM3 is very active and has strict guidelines as to who can represent its views. This is currently limited to members of the IOM3 Team and senior active supporters or volunteers in the governance structure such as trustees.
In addition, active supporters or volunteers are not able to make financial or legal commitments on behalf of IOM3. You should speak with the IOM3 Team contact attached to the activity you are involved with, who will take the matter forward directly or will come back to you with a response.
General Election Guidance 2024
IOM3 has always been a neutral organisation and strives to continue to be so. As an ASV, you represent the Institute and there are careful considerations that you need to make before organising activity or posting on social media. Our guidance document describes the approach we expect IOM3 employees and volunteers to take, which is based on advice provided by the Charity Commission.
