The Friction Welding and Processes Team has an extremely strong history of innovation and developing processes that have changed the game for a number of industries. Products that have been directly impacted by the innovations and developments made by our team include, space rockets, train carriages, battery packs for electric vehicles, nuclear storage canisters and aerospace engines.
You will get challenging tasks from day one with early responsibilities within cutting edge projects. Examples of projects we are currently engaged in that have the potential to disrupt the current manufacturing approach include:
- Development of FSW for Hydrogen Storage Tanks enabling low emission Flight
- Investigating new manufacturing processes for first wall panels to enable the next generation of fusion reactors
- Developing state of the art joining processes to manufacture near-net-shape parts to reduce waste, environmental impact and cost or components for space
The successful applicant's main duties and responsibilities would include:
- Lead – Bring a team together to deliver a range of research and development projects.
- Project Management - Ensure projects are delivered to quality, time and budget.
- Client liaison – Understanding client needs and how we can best support them.
- Technical Reporting – Writing and delivering scientific reports.
- Business development – Identifying and converting opportunities to deliver work to our clients.
- Proposal preparation – Estimating costs and timelines associated with delivering work and delivering this to the client as a pitch or bid.
- Innovation – contribute to the development of new ideas and approaches.

- Has a good base of engineering knowledge but is keen to expand the breadth and depth of their knowledge with the help of our industry leading experts.
- Is excited to engage with a wide range of industry sectors, with a diverse set of manufacturing challenges.
- Is able to clearly and efficiently communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Is persistent in their pursuit of excellence, even in the face of challenging situations.
The successful applicant will sit in the Friction Welding and Processes Section, experience or knowledge of friction welding would be an advantage however we strongly encourage anyone interested in the role to apply.
We are searching for a person who is motivated by a challenge, egger to be involved and contribute to the future success of the section.
The role will include understanding the needs of our customers and disseminating our most recent developments, as such this position will require occasional travel both in the UK and abroad.
We have exciting opportunities to push the boundaries of what friction technologies can achieve within the defence sector, as such the ability to gain UK Security Clearance will be of high importance.
