Due to a change of speaker at the last moment, the Western Institute of Mining and Minerals is proud to announce that Mr James Thorne, CEO of the Institute of Quarrying, has kindly stepped forward to present a paper on the developments taking place at the National Stone Centre (NSC), based at Wirksworth, near Matlock Bath, just outside the Peak District. As an industry which is always in need of attracting new talent, the NSC provides a public outlet for the minerals sector to inspire future generations to enter the minerals industry. Based on the edge of the Derbyshire Peak District, the site offers huge potential to host public and industry events. Plans for a new learning and visitor centre were submitted in November 2022, meeting with significant media interest. The facility will provide learning space, a substantial exhibition area, a café, shop and outdoor activity space. The plans include the collaboration and relocation of the Peak District Mining Museum from Matlock Bath to support the ambition of the centre representing the whole mineral extractives sector. We hope this exciting proposal will be met with a great deal of interest as the challenges affecting both the mining and minerals sectors are very similar and ways to engage and enthuse the younger generation are becoming very relevant if the UK is to rise to the challenge of addressing the climate change and sustainability issues, we as a nation must face in the forthcoming years. The talk will be followed by a buffet and networking opportunity. If you are unable to attend in person it will also be via Zoom
