Southern Counties Materials Minerals & Mining Society (SCMMMS)

The Southern Counties Materials Minerals and Mining Society (SCMMMS) was rebranded from the former West Surrey Materials Society (WSMS) in May 2021.

The refreshed SCMMMS now covers a wider catchment area within the SE region managed by an enthusiastic, diverse, and inclusive committee with representation from the national metrology institute, industry and academia.  The 2021 programme was off to a fantastic start with the first online event in May attracting over 190 participants worldwide. The momentum has since been maintained with continuous interest from both industry and academia. The chair and speakers have been leading experts from national metrology institutes, industry and academia.

The series of monthly events are focused on advanced materials characterisation highlighting the important metrological and standards aspects of materials characterisation. Measurement techniques, application areas, reference materials and insight into best practice guidance are covered. The events are CPD approved by IOM3 and targeted towards students, early career researchers, technicians and acts as a forum to engage with experts and specialists in the field.

Capitalising on online events has also enabled a global reach for these events for both speakers and participants thus providing excellent international networking opportunities.
