Talk Summary:
Semiconductor technologies lie at the heart of virtually all modern electronic devices, from smartphones and wearables to advanced medical equipment and autonomous vehicles. In this talk, we will explore how semiconductors function as the fundamental building blocks of devices, enabling breakthroughs in computing power, connectivity, energy efficiency and health & well-beiong. We will also delve into current research trends, including nanoscale transistors and quantum computing, Central to Swansea’s capabilities in these fields is the university’s new Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM) fabrication facility, which supports cutting-edge development of Silicon Carbide (SiC) power devices, crucial for efficient energy conversion and sustainability. We will also explore graphene-based sensors for real-time, high-sensitivity detection, pioneering healthcare devices utilizing MEMS processing technology, showcasing the transformative potential of semiconductor innovation.
