Abstract: The lecture will give an overview of the construction industry and its contribution to the carbon emissions. It will explore solutions and technologies aiming at decarbonising the concrete industry by identifying the key materials and their role. By looking at infrastructure materials at different scales, including strength, micro-structure properties, durability and resilience, the talk will introduce the audience to a range of solutions and their readiness for the construction industry. Considering a range of low-carbon technologies for concrete infrastructures, with a particular focus on waste re-purposing, the challenges associated with scale-up and adoption by the construction
Biography
Dr Riccardo Maddalena is a Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering at Cardiff University, and Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) for the School of Engineering. He is a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Environmentalist and Chartered Scientist, and member of the IMMM. Riccardo is involved in national and international committees dedicated to standardisation and development of low-carbon materials, including the IOM3 Cementitious Group and RILEM. His research interests include the development of low-carbon cementitious materials focusing on circular economy. With collaborations around the world, Riccardo’s aim is to provide sustainable solutions to decarbonise the concrete industry in line with the UK Net Zero goals. From nanoscale to bulk-scale, his research investigates re-purposing industrial waste as the next generation of Portland cement replacement materials.
