From cars to buildings, tin cans to coins, steel is one of the most abundant metals on the planet. Demand for steel is increasing everyday and, according to the World Economic Forum, is expected to increase 30% by 2050. Yet the environmental impact of steel production accounts for around 7% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. So, how do we meet the global need for steel whilst also reducing its impact on the planet? What role does materials engineering play in this journey? In this presentation, Dr Laura Baker will talk about her own career as a Materials Engineer in the steel industry and discuss how steel can provide solutions to the environmental challenges facing us today.
