Please note that the AGM will be held prior to the lecture entitled "Risk-Based Approach for Safety Reviews of Tailings Dams" on Thursday, 10th October 2024.
This presentation by Sam (Maysam) Safavian, Principal Geotechnical, Tailings and Dams Engineer at SLR Consulting, highlights how a risk-based approach enhances the safety review of tailings dams, safeguarding societies and efficiently protecting assets and reputation.
Quantitative piping risk assessment, utilizing the piping toolbox, offers a unified method to estimate failure probabilities due to internal erosion and piping in embankment dams. Developed collaboratively by the University of NSW, URS, US Army Corps of Engineers, and US Bureau of Reclamation, this method provides a robust framework for evaluating dam safety. A detailed case study applies a risk-based safety assessment, integrating quantitative piping assessment to evaluate societal risks from various failure modes. F-N plots illustrate risk levels, adhering to the ALARP Principle, while exploring implications and mitigation options for enhanced dam safety. Sam Safavian, a Chartered Civil Engineer with extensive experience in tailings and mine waste engineering, leads these efforts, contributing as a technical committee member of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.
