At talk by Brian Robb, Professor of Industrial Engineering at Birmingham University. Sustainability in the industrial manufacturing context has become an increasing focus over the last 10-15 years. With the growing realisation and eventual acceptance of the effect of green-house gases on our climate; the awareness of the deleterious effect of poor treatment of waste materials on health, safety and continued economic operation; the need to include the aspects of re-use, re-purpose and re-cycle in the product cycle have all resulted in a change in mindset. Our ability to operate safely, competitively and profitably whilst being considerate of our environmental and societal impact is now centre stage for many companies, but not yet all. This lecture will aim to discuss the increasing maturity of sustainability development in manufacturing by sharing learning from historic case studies and recent activities - and to enable an interactive conversation with attendees.
