Social Visit to Claymills Victorian Pumping Station
Add to calBurton-on-Trent
Take this opportunity for a special private tour of Claymills Pumping Station near Burton on Trent. Claymills Victorian Pumping Station was constructed in the late 1800s to resolve an acute problem caused by the large number of breweries in the area, namely sewage! The 4 giant beam engines, in two engine houses pumped the effluent to the Sewage Farm at Etwall for almost 90 years, but were superseded when the new sewage treatment works was built next door, and the site was abandoned. After 30 years a trust was formed to restore Claymills – a huge task which is performed by many dedicated volunteers.
The site contains four large beam engines, nearly 30 other steam engines and a large steam driven workshop. The engines won’t be in steam for our visit but can be seen in full steam on bank holidays through the year (see website for details).
The event is free but pre-registration is necessary. Please register by Tuesday 25th June. Light refreshments will be provided.
