With tin recognised as a critical metal, which is key to the clean energy transition in the UK and beyond, the high-grade tin deposits at South Crofty can play an important part in providing a responsibly mined domestic source of this metal for the benefit of all.
This lecture will update Cornish Metals' progress with mine dewatering and treating the mine water, refurbishment of New Cooks Kitchen shaft and developments on many other exciting areas of the project as the mine advances towards planned tin production in 2027.
Steve Tarrant is the Mine Manager at South Crofty tin mine in Cornwall, a position he has held since 2019. Being a local Cornish boy, with a family background in the industry, mining was always a passion, which upon graduating as a mining engineer from the CSM, he was fortunate to be able to develop, spending some time as a trainee miner at South Crofty in 2008.
Steve then left the UK for ten years working overseas, with experience ranging from technical engineering roles to underground operator and shift boss roles during several years spent in the Republic of Ireland, to managing transitional changes in established underground mines in South Africa.
Steve returned to Cornwall and South Crofty in 2018, before taking on his current role and helping develop the project to its current state as part of the team determined to bring underground tin mining back to Cornwall.
