Welcome to the third Hume-Rothery Seminar on Phase Equilibria and Computational Materials Chemistry

The meeting is organised primarily by the Materials Chemistry Group (MCG), a sub-group of the Materials Properties and Characterisation of Materials Group of the IOM3, but it is with great pleasure that again we have been joined by SGTE (Scientific Group Thermodata Europe), who have been responsible for organising the programme for the second day. In addition, the MCG would like to thank them for sponsoring this event.

A new item for this meeting is the Hume-Rothery Lecture, and we are very pleased that the recipient of the IOM3 Hume-Rothery Prize for 2020, Prof Klaus Hack, will present his recent research work on True Aqueous Phase Diagrams.

Thermodynamics and phase diagrams are fundamental aspects of Materials Science that can be applied to solving real industrial problems, as well as to understanding the fundamental behaviour of materials. They are therefore key subjects that should be understood by a materials researcher. The purpose of these biennially-held seminars is two-fold. Firstly, to provide some basic information on phase diagrams and thermodynamics, and arguably more importantly, how they and the techniques described, can be used as tools to help the materials science researcher. Secondly, with the help of SGTE, we will show the latest advances in powerful computational techniques and how they can be applied to an array of complex problems and industrial processes in Materials Science.

Through these meetings, we are also hoping to create a community of researchers from industry and academia who can share experiences and knowledge of using phase equilibria and computational materials science. Please, join our mailing list – we are publishing a biannual newsletter. Join our LinkedIn group (Chemical Thermodynamics of Materials) and follow us on Twitter (@MatChemComm) to keep in touch with our community. Look out for our fourth annual conference on Thermodynamics and Materials Chemistry AToMS2025), which will be held at Bangor University in July. And lastly, spread the word to all your colleagues.

We hope that you find the meeting both stimulating and enjoyable, and that maybe we can transfer a little of the passion we have for the subject to you.
