Status of the UK Steel Industry, its Future Direction and Key Challenges

Gareth Stace, Director General of UK Steel, will present an insightful talk titled "Status of the UK Steel Industry, its Future Direction and Key Challenges" at the upcoming IOM3 event. With over 33,700 individuals directly employed and supporting an additional 42,000 through supply chains, the UK steel industry contributes significantly to the nation's economy, adding £1.8 billion directly to the UK GVA and an additional £2.4 billion through supply chains. However, the sector faces pressing challenges, including high energy costs, trade barriers, and the imperative to decarbonise.

In his presentation, Gareth will delve into the strategic initiatives outlined in UK Steel's 2024 manifesto aimed at revitalising the sector. These include advocating for the lowest industrial electricity prices in Europe, enhancing steel scrap competitiveness, and fostering government-industry partnerships for decarbonisation. He will also address the importance of robust trade defences and leveraging public procurement to support domestic steelmakers. Attendees can expect a comprehensive analysis of the current landscape, future directions, and the collaborative efforts required to ensure the resilience and sustainability of the UK steel industry, through a Government Steel Strategy.
