Brief E: The Future Reuse/Refill Ribena Concentrate Bottle

Sponsored by Suntory

The world is changing and we have to be ready. We have to continue measures to reduce our environmental impact to be as sustainable as possible. Furthermore rules and regulations are set to change to encourage reuse and refill models across the soft drinks industry. Consumers are now more conscious than ever.

The Brief

We want you to design the next generation packaging for Lucozade (Sport or Energy – your preference).

The design needs to suit/fit the brand proposition/ usage (eg. the delivery for Sport will be very different to that for Energy). We want you to be as creative as possible with your design and concept generation stage but also keeping in mind the product delivery, ergonomics of pack handling and potential other value add features for the consumer. It needs to be a good, positive, fun experience and one that they will want to keep repeating as well as sharing with their connections!

Currently our iconic Ribena Concentrate packaging is single use, however we want to move to a reuse/refill model for this product.

The task is to generate a Ribena 850ml concrete bottle design (including cap design and label design) that can be reused and refilled considering the whole closed loop supply chain from filling the bottle, through to consumer use and then collection, cleaning and refilling.

How the packaging design works for a refill / reuse closed loop system must be shown clearly.

Points to consider

  • The whole supply chain, this should justify the packaging structure design. (Bottle production – filling – distribution – consumer use – collection – cleaning – refilling).
  • Palletisation efficiency.
  • Any secondary packaging.
  • How the reuse/refill process can be communicated to consumers through the label artwork design (If you choose to have a label at all!).
  • Ease of use, cleaning, and re-filling in the packaging design.
  • Any opportunities to be interactive with consumers would be advantageous.

Materials to be used

Packaging material should be selected based on the most sustainable option and be considered for all packaging, not just the bottle. Think about including recycled content.
