Two members of the board of the WTS (Dr Graham Ormondroyd FIMMM
and Dr Morwenna Spear FIMMM)
have been selected to lead a consortium to deliver a review on ‘The potential for using bioenergy resources for construction and other non-energy uses’ for the Committee on Climate Change. This review will feed into the updated Bioenergy Review 2018, which will be published by the CCC in the Autumn.
The consortium has brought together leading experts in the uses of timber and bio-based materials (The BioComposites Centre), Life Cycle Assessment and Environmental Product Declarations (JCH Industrial Ecology, Renuables) and Carbon accounting and Discounting (Professor Colin Price). The team will deliver a review of biomass availability for bioenergy and bio-based materials, as well as timber in longer term applications such as construction. The study will include a deep review of the role of bioenergy crops and timber in construction in greenhouse gas abatement.
Dr Graham Ormondroyd, Vice Chair of the WTS commented ‘through the WTS’s links with the industry and trade associations the team will be able to give an in-depth analysis of the sector and market attitudes to development of timber in construction, and its environmental benefits, such as storage of sequestered carbon in buildings’.
