Surface Engineering - it's more than just skin deep

14 Nov 2017

This event has been organised jointly by the Institute's Schools Affiliate Scheme and Surface Engineering Division.

Surface engineering is all around us and yet it is something that is overlooked by most.  By modifying the surface structure of a material we can control properties and add functionality.

This event is designed to give you an overview of this exciting and thriving area of materials.  It will give you contexts that you can use in your teaching and careers ideas that you can pass on to your students.

Your are welcome to arrive from 0900 and the formal proceedings will start with the keynote lecture given by David Rickerby, the Chair of our Surface Engineering Division, at 0930.  The technical presentations, given by other experts in their field will cover a range of areas including coatings for wear resistance and surface modification for corrosion protection.  Over lunch you will have the chance to chat with the speakers further and there will be an open discussion session after the final presentation to ask any other questions you may have.  In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to engage with hands-on workshops looking at enamelling, brazing and paint.

The day will conclude with a session in which you will look at how you can use the things you have learnt back in the classroom.  Once the obligatory feedback forms have been completed the course will close at approximately 1615.

This conference is open to all science and design technology teachers and places are not limited to one teacher per school.  Registration is on a first come first served basis and there are 20 places available.  Although the conference is free to attend, we ask for a deposit of £50 to secure your place, this will be refunded during the event.

We understand that it can be difficult to be released from your teaching commitments, but we firmly believe that opportunities such as our conference offer countless benefits to improving your practice and enriching the education of the children you teach.  We have worked hard to secure sponsorship to make attending easier and we are able to offer every practicing teacher a contribution of £150 towards the cost of cover, where appropriate.

To register please download and complete the application form below.  The closing date for registrations is Monday 06 November 2017.
