Dr Bernie Rickinson, IOM3 Chief Executive, visited St Petersburg, Russia, in May to chair the Russia Young Persons’ Lecture Competition final. Six individuals were selected to deliver their presentations to a judging panel at Saint-Petersburg Mining University.

2018 is the second year students and young professionals from Russia have taken part in the event. Dr Bernie Rickinson said, ‘It is excellent to see the continued involvement from Russia in the competition. This is a great achievement in growing the materials, minerals and mining community.’

The winner of the national competition was Alexandra Kuznetsova. She discussed how a flooding process administered to low permeable clay reservoirs using a patented surfactant composition could increase oil recovery. The Saint-Petersburg Mining University student will join the other national winners in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, for the Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition Final.

Second place was jointly awarded to Ilya Danilov and Diana Kasymova. Judges were impressed with Danilov’s talk on alloy casting and Kasymova’s lecture on prospects of bio-pressure technologies in gold production.
