Progress in Steel Product Research to Advance the Industry and Society
Steel development for important markets like automobile manufacturing, construction, machinery, energy, etc. has been ongoing for generations, and has enabled steel to play an important role in modern society. We might consider that metallurgists or materials scientists and engineers are often unsung heroes of this progress in the steel industry, and indeed in many other industries where materials development enables technological progress. While steel metallurgy is sometimes considered a “mature” area, steel developments are occurring faster than ever in some areas today, and these developments require close coupling with user industries (to ensure manufacturability and performance in service) and constant modernization of steel producing facilities. In this presentation, progress in selected steel developments over several decades will be highlighted, along with some current developments (including physical metallurgy and enabling facilities) that have been implemented recently or will be implemented in the near future, and some current challenges or areas of future development.
The Bessemer Lecture will take place at the Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield on Friday 10 November 2017, commencing at 17:45. Prior to the lecture, the winners of Iron and Steel Society awards for 2017 will be presented with their medals.
This will be a public lecture, and anyone interested in the topic is welcome to attend. There is no charge for attending the lecture but you do need to register in advance, using the link below.
The Bessemer Lecture will be followed by a three-course dinner at the Cutlers’ Hall. On this occasion, this will be incorporated with the Sheffield Metallurgical and Engineering Association (SMEA) Annual Dinner. Tickets for the dinner are £50 plus VAT. Dress code for the dinner is lounge suits. If you are interested in attending the dinner, please contact Geoff Hale in the first instance (E:-firstname.lastname@example.org; T:-+44 (0) 775 148 3715).
