Material Selection for Powder Products

Many products are manufactured from powder materials ranging from ceramics to pharmaceuticals. Physical behaviour and properties of the powder is important in the manufacturing processes and final use, including mechanical properties, dimensional tolerances, stability, weight, and content uniformity.
The formulation of powder mixes will be discussed, to optimise the properties needed for the manufacturing processes. Numerical modelling and experimental characterisation are currently used to determine the above, but a new software tool, the Virtual Formulation Laboratory, has been developed to test the effects of formulation changes without the need to physically produce a range of powders.
The talk will focus on the science base necessary for understanding of surfaces, particulate structures, and bulk behaviour to address physical, chemical and mechanical stability of solids based formulations during processing and storage.
Talk commences at 6.30 pm. Light refreshments served from 6.00 pm.
Short presentations about IOM3 and EMMS will be given before the main talk.
